ASO for Android Games: How to Rank Higher on Google Play

RoverPlay Studio · · 8 min read

App Store Optimization (ASO) is how players find your game without paid ads. On Google Play, ranking depends on how relevant your listing is to a search and how well players respond once they find it.

Title (30 characters)

Put the brand name and the most important genre keyword in the title — for example a dinosaur survival game should say "Dino" and "Survival". Avoid keyword stuffing; Google Play policy rejects it.

Short description (80 characters)

One sentence that states the hook and genre. This is shown on the store page above the fold and is indexed for search.

Full description (4,000 characters)

Google Play indexes the full description. Use your main keywords naturally 3–5 times, describe features in short scannable lines, and write for players first.

Graphics that convert

  • Icon: simple, readable at small size, one strong character or object.
  • Screenshots: real gameplay, the best moment first, short captions.
  • Feature graphic and video: show the core loop in the first seconds.

Ratings, stability and updates

Google Play weighs install conversion, retention, crash rate and ratings. Reply to reviews, fix crashes quickly and ship regular updates — these quietly improve rankings over time.

Test everything

Use Store Listing Experiments in the Play Console to A/B test icons, screenshots and descriptions. Small changes to the icon alone can move conversion meaningfully.
